Following the closure of the beloved Alhambra Theatre in Doornfontein, Pieter Toerien’s Montecasino Theatre in Johannesburg opened in 2000.  The initial auditorium held 320 seats, but a refurbishment in 2011 saw the seating capacity was increased to 400. The theatre has hosted a plethora of hit musicals and dramas over the years, launching the careers of many South African performers.
